Titicaca Lake in Peru and Ticonata Island, perfect for trekking and history immersion

Most tourists know of Lake Titicaca because of  the Uros floating islands, Taquile Island, or because it is the highest largest navigable lake in the world. But this region has much more to offer than that. My favorite spot is the tiny island of Ticonata. There is a lot to explore and discover there.

Titicaca Lake and Ticonata Island –

Where are they?

Ticonata is one of the many islands located near the Capachica peninsula. It is in the Ccotos community territory that lives in this area.

According to research, selected islands of Titicaca Lake were inhabited since 8000 years b.c. What were they used for? Mainly they were living spaces, and used for farming. On many of them ancient ceremonies were taking place. Ticonata is one of the examples.

Nowadays Ticonata is being used only for farming like growing potatoes, beans, some wheat and also for grazing cattle. In the past this place was dedicated to many different things. It was a place of worshiping Gods. Apparently it was one of the ceremonial islands, on a huge pilgrims trail, connecting all cult centers located on other islands. Ceramic pieces, discovered here, prove their religious usage. Mummies of women have been discovered here as well.

How to spend good time on Ticonata Island?

During the visit on this island you will get a chance not only to see beautiful landscapes of Titicaca Lake, but also to learn the history of the area and find out that even small islands have a lot to offer.

Apart from trekking and visiting mummies, it is worth to have a chat with local people. Ask them about local, medicinal plants that are available here. Even though the island is small, you can find there a lot of plants with medicinal purposes.
